Thanksgiving 2011

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. Of all the “special occasions”, this one is the most centered on cultivating a thankful heart and recognizing God as the giver of our blessings. I’m not terribly creative with decoration ideas for this holiday, though. But I did come across an idea online of a “thankful tree” this year. It looked fun, so we gave it a try.

The girls and I had fun gathering sticks from the yard and cutting out leaves to hang on the “branches”. It looked a little less artsy than the picture that inspired me, but the girls enjoyed it, and it got our hearts focusing more on gratefulness. So I guess I can call is a success, no matter how “sad” it looked! Here’s a photo to make you smile. πŸ™‚

It works to inspire thankfulness, even if it is a little Charlie-Brown-ish, right? πŸ™‚ You can see some of the things we wrote on the leaves. Natalie wanted to say she was thankful for “pink”. That made me laugh! Felicia was thankful for Christmas! (You can see that on the orange leaf right in front!)

The Lord blessed us this year with the blessing of celebrating Thanksgiving with our friends the Pestkes and the Helgrens. It was fun coordinating the menu and trying to compile all of our “American” stash into the classic feast. We used marshmallows, Jif peanut butter, canned pumpkin, shortening, chocolate chips, pecans… It was certainly a meal to remember!

Joy, me and Savannah in the kitchen. We had lots of laughs in between tasting the gravy and joking about being hypnotized by the peanut butter fumes! πŸ™‚

Our family on Joey’s first Thanksgiving! He loved the butternut squash. πŸ™‚

After the meal, the dads took the children outside for a friendly game of soccer. We had children 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. πŸ™‚Β  (This was taken earlier in the year).

Damon was able to get a little video of the game. I laughed at Lily giving Felicia hugs throughout. Definitely how a girl copes with “competitive” sports!

While sitting on the Pestke’s porch, watching my husband and our children enjoy this game with friends, hearing the laughter of all involved, feeling the cooler breeze thanks to the air being all fresh from the recent rain, our bellies full of yummy dishes from our childhood memories, I was keenly aware of God’s blessings on us. He didn’t have to allow us all these when He called us to another country, yet He graciously provided for each of these all on one ‘”holiday from home. It was certainly a day that inspired giving thanks to the Lord!
